A large-scale search operation is underway in East Finnmark after ten soldiers failed to return from a military exercise. A rescue helicopter has been deployed, and the situation is still unfolding.
“We are currently searching south of the E6 in Varangerbotn,” said Jakob Carlsen, rescue leader at HRS Northern Norway.
The helicopter, dispatched from Banak in Porsanger on Thursday evening, is assisting in the operation. According to Carlsen, initial reports suggest the soldiers did not return following the training exercise.
Brage Wiik-Hansen, spokesperson for the Norwegian Armed Forces, would not comment on the details of the exercise but said: “The Armed Forces are working to get an overview of the situation. We will provide updates when more information is available.”
Rescue Efforts on the Ground
Police confirmed the launch of the search just before 7 p.m., stating the soldiers were last seen in the Bugøynes area.
The operation involves the police, the Armed Forces, Norwegian rescue dogs, the Red Cross, and the use of drones.
According to police, the soldiers were expected to return by 7 a.m. Thursday morning but never arrived.
